Join Artist-in-Residence Louise Smith on Monday and Tuesday, afternoons to discover the infinite possibilities of still life drawing. Working with a variety of materials, each participant will have the opportunity to observe and explore perspective, hand-eye coordination, and the depiction of forms in light. Formal elements such as composition, color, and surface will also be investigated, mediums will include charcoal and paint, all in a hands-on, experimental way!

Artist Bio: Louise Smith, Artist-in-Residence at Instar Lodge, is interested in investigating techniques that encourage young people to dive into and develop new visual arts skills. Louise received her Post Baccalaureate degree in Painting and Drawing at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2017, where she assisted in teaching an introduction to sculpture class. Smith graduated with a B.F.A. from Bard College in 2013, where she was the recipient of the Jane Fromm Yacenda Scholarship of the Arts. Louise has been an administrative assistant and curator at the Hudson Opera House, now Hudson Hall, where she also conducted an abstract painting workshop for kids. She has prepared large-scale canvases and maintained the studio space of painter Stephen Hannock and worked as an assistant for sculptor Petah Coyne. In the Summer of 2017, Louise took part in the Bright Future Group Show, at the Basilica Back Gallery in Hudson, New York where she lives. She is currently working on completing a mural commission at the Freehand Hotel, in New York, NY. Louise hopes to provide workshops that help strengthen communities and support the arts.
