“Schools are designed on the assumption that there is a secret to everything in life; that the quality of life depends on knowing that secret; that secrets can be known only in orderly successions; and that only teachers can properly reveal these secrets. An individual with a schooled mind conceives of the world as a pyramid of classified packages accessible only to those who carry the proper tags.”― Ivan Illich
What do we believe are the key elements to a “good” education? If we could have the schooling we wanted, what would that look like? These and other big questions and criticisms will be explored together at the last of this year’s FREE public Autumn Place Community Conversation co-hosted with Good Work Institute. We will walk and talk throughout the beautiful campus of Bard College.
Some book titles that lead to this month’s Community Conversation include: Deschooling Society by Ivan Illich, Teaching Community: A Pedagogy of Hope by bell hooks, and Art as Experience by John Dewey.
Discussion Date & Time: 11/18 3-5pm. This will be a walking conversation at Bard Campus in Annandale, NY exact location TBA.
