Representation: Autumn Place Community Conversation with Magpie Bookshop

REPRESENTATION

If I didn't define myself for myself, I would be crunched

into other people's fantasies for me and eaten alive.”― Audre Lorde

Instar Lodge is pleased to announce their FREE Autumn Place Community Conversations series co-hosted with Good Work Institute, kicking off on September 23rd, 3-5pm at Magpie Books in Catskill, NY. Though no prior reading or expertise is required, Autumn Place Community Conversations are inspired by Instar Lodge’s What We’re Reading book list. This season’s titles continue to explore questions of place--our relationship to place and the myths and narratives about place that might need reexamining.

How do we represent ourselves, our stories, and our places? How do represent or misrepresent the stories of others?  This month we examine representation of the personal narrative through writing, exploring it through ethnography, poetics, letters, historical biography, autobiography and biomythography.  How do we navigate truth in history and collective memory? Who’s voice do we trust or listen to when exploring a history or a place?  How do stories change long held beliefs? These and other big questions and criticism will be explored together. We can't wait to walk and talk and muse and explore with you.

SEPTEMBER 23rd, 3:00pm at Magpie Bookshop in Catskill NY.
